Robert L. (Bob) Hartley, 80, died early Wednesday at the Waters of Yorktown after a long illness.
Mr. Hartley was born in Muncie to Rev. William and Opal Marceil (Denney) Hartley. He attended Muncie schools. Early in his life he was a cab driver and worked at the meat counter of Ross Supermarket.
He married Jacqueline (Clore) Hartley in 1963. They celebrated their 50th anniversary this past July.
He worked more than 30 years at Chevrolet-Muncie, starting as a production worker and advancing to become a quality control supervisor before his retirement.
After retiring from General Motors, he worked at J. C. Penney and also was an auto dealer auditor for American National Bank.
Mr. Hartley was a longtime Democratic precinct committeeman and served one term on Delaware County Council and one term as Delaware County commissioner. After leaving elected office, he served as Delaware County building commissioner for several years before his retirement.
In addition to elected office, he was active in other Delaware County Democratic Party campaigns and activities. He was a member of party’s Rooster Boosters and the Chanticleer Club.
Mr. Hartley was a member of United Auto Workers Local 499, where he was a former union committeeman. He also was a member and former president of Muncie Lions Club, and he served many years and was a former president of the Delaware County Fair Board.
Mr. Hartley loved to play golf and spent many hours over the years with his hobbies of auto mechanics and restoration and carpentry work.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Donnie Hartley (wife: Cathy) and Gregory Maynard (wife: Vicki) both of Muncie; a daughter, Brenda West (husband: Vaughn), Muncie; one brother, Joe W. Hartley (wife: Geneva), Muncie; five sisters, Ruby M. Nichols (husband: Bobby) and Bonita Posey (husband: Arvel Jr.), both of Muncie; Pat Lehman (husband: Kenneth), Lakeland, Fla., Janet Reffitt (husband: Vernon), Valrico, Fla., and Wanda S. Bean (husband: Bill) Tuscola, Ill; two step brothers, Paul Lane (wife: Jackie), Elwood, and Daniel Lane (wife: Ann), Florida; two step sisters, Janice L. Shively (husband: Marsahl D.) and Rebecca E. Hartley (husband: Wilbur), both of Elwood; two aunts, Marge Clanin, Muncie, and Betty LeMay, Circleville, Ohio; five grandchildren, Donnie Hartley Jr. (wife: Christy), and Michelle Hartley (fiancé: Steve Stone), both of Muncie, Michael Maynard and Hannah Maynard, both of McCordsville, and Phillip Maynard, Muncie; two step grandsons; four great-grandchildren; one step great-grandson, and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald E. Hartley.
