June 25, 1936 – November 28, 2014
Robert Kern, 78, passed away at his home on Thanksgiving night, early on Friday, November 28, 2014, after a 3 year battle with cancer. Born in Bellevue, Ohio, on June 25, 1936, he was the son of Ralph Ingram Kern and Evelyn Peltier Kern. Bob was one of 5 boys who signed up for the military following graduation from Bellevue High School (from a graduating class of about 30). He served in the Marines for 4 years. Bob had a lifelong passion for sports, particularly football. He loved the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Cleveland Browns and Indians. Long after he left the state of Ohio, he continued to show his allegiance to his beloved Buckeyes. He worked for Braniff International in both Dallas and San Antonio and whenever Coach Woody Hayes landed, Bob would meet him at the gate and escort him wherever he needed to go. Bob loved food. Within his family, he would try various recipes always seeking the “best of” whether it was chili, sausage, chicken wings, or bread pudding. Bob cared for the poor and the underdog. He lived the maxim: There is always someone worse off than you are. He gave to others in need, buying toys for children named on Christmas trees who otherwise had no Christmas. When Bob was transferred to San Antonio, he and Sally moved to the Hill Country near Boerne. He later worked for DHIA, Dairy Herd Improvement Association as a Dairy Supervisor. Bob is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sally Brite Kern; three children, Robert Leslie “Bo” Kern, William Kenneth Kern, and Kathleen Kern Cunningham; two sisters, Claudia Harkness of Bellevue, Ohio, and Lurlynn Smith of Seguin, Texas; and four grandchildren, Katie Olivia Farrell of Anderson, Indiana, Yvonne Bobbette Odell Kern of South Dakoka, John “Jack” Ransom Walker Cunningham and Henry Ingram Clifford “Hank” Cunningham of Austin, TX. His family is grateful to the VA for years of care.
