Robert Hugh “Bob” Land, 85, Anderson, passed away June 21, 2011, at Bethany Pointe Health Campus-Anderson after a brief battle with Acute Leukemia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Audie and Mabel Land. Bob was born April 7, 1926, in Bicknell, Indiana, moving to Anderson in 1931. Following his graduation from Anderson High School in 1944, Bob immediately enlisted in the US Marine Corps and was recognized by the Governor of Indiana as being the ten-thousandth Marine from Indiana to enlist since the beginning of World War II. Bob served his country in both World War II and the Korean War, earning the rank of Captain. Between the wars, Bob graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Industrial Management. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Following the Korean War, Bob went to work at Guide Lamp; retiring as Superintendent of Purchasing & Material Control in 1988. Bob was a lifelong member, Deacon, and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church was past President of the Board of Directors of the Anderson Parks & Recreation Department, served on the Board of Directors of the Wilson’s Boys Club, and was a member of the John Purdue Club, Madison County Purdue Alumni Club, and the Kiwanis Club. After retirement, Bob was also on the Anderson Literacy Board and served as a literacy tutor.
Bob is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan Baugh Land; sister, Doris Malaguerra Elmer of Denver, North Carolina; daughter, Carol McCarthy Jim of Anderson; two sons, Tom Land Lorie of Charleston, South Carolina, and Jim Land Angela of Cincinnati, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Megan McCarthy, Kyle McCarthy, Abby Land, Drake Land, Amy Land, Ryan Land, Alyssa Branigan, and Alec Branigan; and one great-grandson, Jackson Land.
