SOUTH BEND – Robert “Herby” Hintz, 59, of South Bend, passed away on Friday March 18, 2022 at his home.  He was born on September 28, 1962 in South Bend, to the late Robert and Irene (Domnanovich) Hintz and was a lifelong area resident.  He is survived by his sister, Susan Hintz and his brother, Joseph Hintz, both of South Bend.

First and foremost, Herby was a very devout Catholic who frequently attended daily Mass and had a strong devotion to The Blessed Mother.  He attended Christ the King Grade School and graduated from Clay High School in 1981.  He played football at Clay as both an offensive and defensive lineman, rarely missing a down, when Jon Gruden was Clay’s quarterback.  As a baseball player for Clay Township J.B.A. he won 2 Championships in 1976 and 1979 and won an additional Championship in 1983  as their head coach for several years. He was a huge fan of all things Notre Dame from the Grotto and Basilica to his beloved ND Football.  In his younger days, he enjoyed competitive golf outings with Dad and Joe and was hard to beat. He even scored a hole in one in 1995 at a charity event.   As a member of UAW Local #5, he spent his working career at AM General starting at the Chippewa plant then at McKinley to build the Humvee, the Commercial Hummer, and the H2.

Herby had a quick wit, was a good storyteller, and loved to make people laugh.  He lived in the family home where we were raised and he cared for our parents in their declining years.  Along with his sister and brother, Herby is survived by his beloved Auntie Helen Domnanovich, Aunt Judy (Hintz) Cira, Uncles Norbert and Raymond Hintz and numerous cousins whom he loved dearly.  Herby was preceded in death by our father in 2000 and mother in 2006.  Also preceding him were his Grandmother Veronica Hintz, Grandfather John Domnanovich, Uncles Joe Pinter and Bill Cira, and Aunts Gertrude Pinter, Margery Hintz, and Barbara Hintz. We are lost without you, little brother, and will miss you forever!
