Robert Henry Shan Sr., 51, of LaSalle-Peru, passed away peacefully in his home on February 8, 2021. His family and friends knew him as someone who worked hard and passionately at his job in mechanics, which he took on for 36 years. Besides working on vehicles, he enjoyed time at the river and spending time with the people he loved. Building campfires and telling stories about how much trouble he got into as a child, grilling food and spending the night in tents that always seemed to let the mosquitoes in. There was never a dull moment that went by when he took out the harmonica he’d always carried in his pocket, playing along to the music on the stereo or coming up with something from scratch.

He was passionate about music and sharing his love for it with those around him. You’d often find him singing and pouring out his soul through melodies and lyrics. The most common place you’d find him was with his family, friends, and loved ones, and other times with a wrench in his hand, telling you “just a few more minutes” so he could make sure the car he was working on was given back to the owner in perfect condition, but only after he took a “spontaneous joyride.” Fixing up houses and taking on the task of leaky pipes, he’d always jump at the opportunity to use his tools.

Survivors include his 11 children, Dakota Haliscky and Richard Hensley of Spring Valley, Laceylynn Shan, Robert Shan, Jr., Abigail Shan, Aliee Shan all of Varna, Paul McMahon of Spring Valley, Taryn Kelchner of Peru and Gaven Kelchner, Hayden McMahon and Rylee Christenberry all of LaSalle; his eight grandchildren, Marleigh, Addisyn, Sophia, Aracelli, Aidan, Jasmine, Anthony and Miyah; ten siblings, Jason Keen of LaSalle, Steven Keen and Erik Keen both of Peru, Patrick Keen of LaSalle, Ryan Keen of Peru, Jennifer (Keen) Filipiak of Colorado, Tracy (Keen) Mazur and Amanda (Keen) Cabrera both of Peru, Marikay Keen of Ottawa and Elizabeth Keen of LaSalle; his long time love and mother of his children, Tammy Shan of Varna and his sweetheart for many years, Cherie McMahon of LaSalle; his brothers in life, Johnny (Gadget) Wilsman and Dan Murphy both of LaSalle, and Joe Frackowiak of Peru, along with many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
