Robert G. Miller, age 98 of Freeport, IL, passed away Friday, February 17, 2017, at the Presence St. Joseph Center in Freeport. He was born February 11, 1919, in New England, ND; the son of the late Fred and Maybelle (McNair) Miller.
He graduated from Davis High School. Robert married Iva M. Meier on August 31, 1946, in Salina, KS. Robert was a Veteran of World War II and had served with the 457th Bomb Group, 8th AF in England. After the war, he served with (SAC) 8th AF until 1959 when he transferred to 15th AF in Guam. He was stationed at Westover AFB, MA upon his return to the States in November 1961, retiring in 1963. He was a Son of the American Revolution. After retiring from his service, he worked for the United States Post Office until retiring in 1981. Robert was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Freeport and a former member of the United Brethren Church in Davis, IL, and of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Citrus Heights, CA. His memberships also include the American Rose Society, Sierra Foothills Rose Society in Citrus Heights, CA, and he was a former member of the Sacramento Rose Society for 27 years. He was an avid golfer, and a member of the Sierra View Country Club in Roseville, CA for 34 years before returning to Illinois. He became a member of Wolf Hollow Golf Course in Lena, IL. While living in California, he cared for roses at his church and Country Club for 20 years. He enjoyed following the PGA, and Champion Golf tours, even traveling with Iva to such places as Spain, Gibraltar, Algiers, Japan, Hong Kong, Germany, France, and England.
Robert is survived by his wife of 70 years, Iva Miller of Freeport; niece, Deborah (Jerry) Fortner of Davis; great-nephews, Randy (Dina) Dornink of Polo, IL, David (Jodie Venditti) Dornink of Dakota, IL, Brian (Lori) Dornink of Freeport, and Jeremy (Amber) Fortner of Dakota; and great-niece, Christie (Steve) Moss of Rock City, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Maurine Wenger; niece, Karlene Dornink; and several aunts & uncles.
