Robert G. Mattone, 54, of Little Silver passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Friday, July 13, 2018 at Riverview Medical Center. He was the adored son of the late John and Muriel Mattone, of Commack, NY. Born in Smithtown, NY, he relocated to Little Silver with his wife and daughter in 2000.
He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara (nee: Morris) and his loving daughter Erin Marie.
A graduate of St. Anthony’s High School in Huntington, N.Y. and the University of Delaware, Bob was an accomplished golfer, winning tournaments throughout his life and was a key member of the golf teams at both schools. Bob was also a former member of the Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, N.Y. and current member of the Monmouth Beach Bath and Tennis Club and an avid New York Rangers hockey fan.
Bob was a career-long advertising sales executive in New York City. His tenure included positions at Sports Illustrated Kids, ESPN Magazine, and TV Guide Magazine. He recently concluded his career at GSTV.
His passion was coaching youth sports, including soccer and lacrosse. For eleven years, he coached boys and girls basketball at Holy Cross School where he inspired many youth athletes to continue their sports careers in high school and college. He loved attending local sports games, especially Red Bank Catholic girls tennis and lacrosse, and was a dedicated fan of his daughter, Erin’s Randolph-Macon Women’s collegiate lacrosse team.
Also surviving are Bob’s Aunts, Marie and Madeline Mattone and their children; cousins, Robert and Charlotte Van derWaag, Irene and Joseph Drago, Michael and Mykee Murtagh, Cathy VanderWaag and Maureen Van derWaag. Additionally, Bob is survived by members of the Morris family: Father-in-law, John C. Morris (Little Silver); brothers-in-law and sisters- in-law, Chris and Pam (Richdale) Morris, David and Peggy (Morris) McGill, Andy and Maribeth (Hackett) Morris, Henry and Liz (Morris) O’Hern, Robert and Kate Sharkey, John and Jeanne (Morris) Fried, Paul and Sally (Nidds) Morris, Michael and Sarah (Morris) Schutsky, and Christopher and Clare (Morris) Broderick, Richard and Jenna (Holthusen) Morris. He is also survived by 24 nieces and nephews and their families.
