Bob, to his friends, was born December 15, 1929 in Akron, Ohio to Eugene “Bud” and Alice (Trautwein) Sutherland. The eldest of three siblings, Bob excelled in school. Bob’s sister Betty survives in Florida and his brother Jim preceded him in death. In 1950, he married Della Mae Stroup in Akron, Ohio. They have four children, Robert Sutherland preceded him in death in 1997.
Surviving children are, Gail Salvatori, Wheaton, IL, Steven (Elizabeth) Sutherland, Palatine, IL, and Ronald (Judy) Sutherland, Upland. Bob was blessed by a loving family. Additional Survivors include Cyndee (Larry) Sutherland Smith; grandchildren, Joshua (Katie) Sutherland, Jesse (Andrea) Sutherland, Lisa (Craig) Ramirez, Jana Salvatori, Katie Salvatori, Becca (Kris) McAllister, Andrew and Hannah Sutherland, Tim (Lissel) Sutherland, and Megan Sutherland; great grandchildren, Cody, Aubrie, Devin, Zoe, Maya, Lila, Alexa, and Brooke.
Bob’s life was marked by a love for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and his wife, Della and the entire family. He served faithfully in various firms, but finished his career with Arvey Corporation and Abbot Laboratories, focused on financial management and systems analysis work. He earned numerous awards and recognitions throughout his career, having been selected man of the year and employee of the year in two different firms. Bob loved to encourage the youth in his community by being an avid supporter of local sports teams. He served for over 15 years in numerous roles with high school women’s basketball teams.
Bob and Della moved to Upland, Indiana in 2005, and became fast favorites of many teams, but in particular, he appreciated the women’s volleyball team, men’s basketball team and women’s basketball team. However, you also saw him at tennis, softball, football, track and baseball games and meets. Seeing quality young people learn lessons from athletics gave him joy. The impact of music on Bob’s life was substantial. He loved to sing, to listen to choirs, and his children and grandchildren perform. Bob’s two other favorite hobbies were reading and puzzle making, both of which he consumed at lightning speed. Lastly, Bob also found contentment and joy in the close relationships he formed throughout his lifetime.
During his three years in Upland, many became friends and he relished spending time with these caring individuals. His wit endeared him to his family and friends as he was able to turn a quick phrase and bring a smile, as well as a chuckle.
