Robert (Bob) Joseph McVey, 92, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2015. Bob was an exemplary husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to all. He lived his life to the fullest, grateful for countless blessings he received during his life. Bob always had a smile on his face and a wonderful sense of humor, leaving those he spoke to happier for having spoken with him. He is survived by his loving wife Charlotte of 63 years, son Michael (wife Karen) and daughter Meg Cullum (husband Peter), granddaughters Kelly McVey, Claire McVey, and Alannah Cullum, sisters Frances Ann McVey and Jane Mary McVey, and several nieces and nephews. Bob was the seventh of nine children born to William and Mary McVey. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings Eugene Francis, Sylvester, Elizabeth Therese, William Gerard, Mary, and James Robert. As a member of the “Greatest Generation,” Bob served in the Army Air Corps from January 1943 through October 1945. After completing aerial gunnery school in Harlingen, Texas, he went on to complete 30 missions as a tail gunner in a B-24 (Liberator) over the skies of North Africa, Italy, Hungary, Austria, and Germany. Bob earned his electrical engineering degree at the University of Denver, and was a field engineer for Sperry Flight Systems for 38 years. He relocated several times for his company, ending up in Scottsdale, Arizona. A parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help since 1967, Bob was also active with the OLPH Men’s Club. Bob’s family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Friendship Village Hospice in Tempe, as well as the medical staff at Honor Health Osborn for all their help and assistance in taking care of Bob.
