Robert J. “Bob” Butters, 68, passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, in Des Moines, IA.

Bob was born in Des Moines, IA and except for some childhood years in California, lived in the state known for the best sweet corn in the world. He honored Iowa with corn on the cob accompanied by a tasty BLT multiple times each summer. Bob says he finally got it right when he married his wife, Judy. Bob and Judy were like salt and pepper; you rarely saw one without the other.

Bob loved taking car rides anywhere, all the time, and especially around Saylorville Lake with Judy and their dog, Lady. Before Lady, they enjoyed these rides with their children, Kim and Jeff, where Bob would quiz the kids to name songs and artists on the oldies radio station. He also enjoyed traveling, going to the farmers market, sitting on the front porch singing along with country songs, cherry pie, watching old Westerns on TV, and listening to his police scanner.

Bob was a proud American (so many of his shirts had flags on them) who rarely missed the Urbandale Fourth of July parade. His career was in public safety spending decades protecting the students at Drake University as well as years doing the same at Principal Financial Group downtown. Yet his passion outside of family was to respect law enforcement and all first responders. Bob served several years as a reserve police officer in the City of Urbandale and participated in the Iowa State Reserve Law Officers Association including a term as president of the organization
