Robert “Andy” Andersen, 71, of Newington passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center, Hartford Hospital. He was the husband of Maryellen (Flanagan) Andersen for 48 years. Born in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Alfin and Martha (Ahlgren) Andersen, and grew up in Windsor Locks. He was a resident of Newington and North Eastham, Cape Cod for 45 years. He was a member of Holy Spirit Church, Newington and Our Lady of the Lourdes Church, Wellfleet, Cape Cod. Andy attended the University of Hartford and Quinnipiac University. He was a professional in the food service industry; owned Newington Mr. Steak Restaurant; and served as Food Director of Aetna Life and Casuality. Andy served in the Connecticut Army National Guard; was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Polish American Club (The Yale Club), Friends of Football, Development Commission, Chequessett Yacht and Country Club, Three Cousin’s Winery, and Irish Parade Committee. He was the recipient of the Newington Honorary Irishman of the Year award. Andy was an avid Red Sox, UCONN basketball, and Patriots fan. He enjoyed traveling, golfing, boating, and reading. He loved making special memories and entertaining family and friends. He also enjoyed relaxing with his golden retriever Seamus. Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter Jody O’Brien and Chris Rubino of Killingworth and her children Meghan and Colin O’Brien; by his daughter Heather Caserta and her husband Ken of Cromwell and their children Molly and Mya Caserta; and by his daughter Hope Lapierre and her husband Stephen of Hebron and their children Madison and Monique Lapierre. He also leaves his sister Christina Andersen of Highland, NC and a special niece and nephew; and sister-in-law Faith and brother-in-law Edmund Casarella of North Eastham, Cape Cod. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center, Hartford Hospital.
