Rita Carvellas Birlidis

Rita Carvellas was born in Manhattan, New York on April 15, 1931 to Greek parents George and Madeline. She worked as an executive for MetLife Insurance and married her husband Vasilios “Bill” Birlidis in February 1957. Daughter Sophia was born that year, and the family moved to Miami in 1959. Sons George and Constantine “Dino” were born in 1960 and 1964. Together they opened the Bird Road Bicycle and Lawnmower Center, later known as Cycle Mart.
Rita taught Sunday School at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
Rita passed away on January 20, 2022 at the age of 90 with her husband Bill by her side. She is survived by Bill and their three children: Sophia (Tony), George (Maria), and Dino; and the family dog, Argos. George and Maria gave Rita two grandchildren, Vasilios “Vasili” (Danielle “Nia”) and Alexandra “Lexi.” Rita also has multiple nieces and nephews who have families of their own. The extended family is large, and so is the love. We all miss Rita very much but her quick wit and bright smile will always be with us.
