Richard “Wayne” McKinney, 90, of Cairo, died Friday morning, October 27, 2017, at his home. He had been in failing health. Wayne was born May 16, 1927, in Cairo to Stanley and Retha (Tomlison) McKinney.
He was born on the family farm and lived there his entire life. He graduated from Cairo High School in 1945, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving for 14 months, before his honorable discharge.
He was a 58 year member of Timberlake Christian Church (formerly Union Avenue Christian Church) where his taught Sunday School classes and he and Frieda were youth sponsors for 7 years. He loved farming and didn’t retire until he was 80 years old.
Wayne married Frieda Wolfe on December 5, 1948, and she survives. Also surviving are his children, Rand McKinney of Cairo, Lana Lucas and husband Larry of New Bloomfield, MO, Mark McKinney and wife Kazan of Cincinnati, OH, Chris McKinney and wife Erika of Terre Haute, IN, Gena Robuck and husband Rob of Cairo; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a grandson, Jared McKinney.
Wayne most of all loved the Lord. His favorite verse of scripture was Isaiah 26:3 “Thou will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee”, he lived this every day. He never met a stranger, and loved hunting wild game, especially pheasants, geese, quail, and turkeys. Wayne loved to read books about hunting in Africa.
