Richard C. Shinnick, 97, of Peru, passed away Friday, April 20, 2018, at his home surrounded by his family. Mr. Shinnick was born on April 26, 1920, in Chicago to Joseph and Grace (Silet) Shinnick.

He married Dorothy J. Malkewicz on June 22, 1946, at St. Joseph’s Church in Peru. Mr. Shinnick received his bachelor of science in pharmacy from the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy. Richard served in the Navy on the USS Wakefield as Chief Pharmacist Mate.  His service to this country included transporting wounded from the D-Day Invasion. He was the owner and operator of Shinnick Pharmacy in Peru with his wife, for 31 years where he worked as a pharmacist.  He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Peru, Holy Name Society, church lector, a 70-year member of the American Legion, National Association of Retail Druggists, and Illinois Pharmacy Association.  One of Richard’s favorite pastimes was driving the back roads of the Illinois Valley. He was also an avid reader of history and mystery.

He is survived by seven children, Patricia (Joel) Gallagher of Galveston, TX, Sr. Mary Shinnick, OSF of Frankfort, IL, Richard (Bill Caldwell) Shinnick, Jr. of Seattle, WA, Kathleen (Michael) Mikrut of Western Springs, IL, Michael (Karen) Shinnick of Spring Valley, Timothy (Mary) Shinnick of LaSalle, and Peggy (Rick) Krueger of Scottsdale, AZ; 14 grandchildren, Sean Gallagher, Kelly Meyers, Ryan Gallagher, T.J. Mikrut, Tom Mikrut, Jonathan Mikrut, Casey Gumina, Julee Corcoran, David Shinnick, Matt Shinnick, Drew Shinnick, Brad Shinnick, Kathryn Seay, and Lauren Baker; 17 great-grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren, Joshua, Travis and Dustin Strait, Nicole Krueger, and Holly Dixon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; one brother, Harold Shinnick; and one sister, Grace Huppert.
