Richard Mike Wonner, age 92, of Salem, died at 12:01 a.m. Friday, August 9, 2013 at the Essex of Salem I. He was born January 15, 1921 in Salem, a son of the late John and Mary (Schmidt) Wonner. Before his retirement in 1982, he had been an accountant at Salem Valve for 7 years and had formerly worked at Salem Welding, Purex and Electric Furnace. He was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church, Salem V.F.W. Post 45, Fraternal Order of Eagles #316, Italian American Club and A.A.R.P. Mr. Wonner was a WWII Navy Veteran, who served in the Pacific Theatre and was the recipient of 6 Bronze Stars and 2 Presidential Citations. His wife, Janet L. (Nonno) Wonner, whom he married October 15, 1945, preceded him in death May 13, 2013. His parents, brother, Bill Wonner and two sisters, Francis Mollenkaff and Hilda Lipjanec also preceded him in death. Survivors include three sons, Richard Larry (Marie) Wonner of Lisbon, David (Patt) Wonner of Salem and Jeffrey (Kim) Wonner of Salem; a brother, John Wonner of Orlando, Florida; six grandchildren, Tracey, Nikki, Rhonda, Barb, Cory and Valerie and five great-grandchildren.
