He started his legal career with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and had a brilliant and successful corporate management career with the McDonnell Douglas Corporation until he retired in 1989.
Richard and his wife Charlene Mills Randall, an artist born in Wellington, New Zealand, met at Syracuse University, started their young family in Manchester, VT (Kenneth), Syracuse, NY (Karen) and moved across the country with their young children through the cities of Albuquerque, NM and Las Vegas, NV (David) until they settled down to raise the family in Newport Beach, CA. Richard was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hiking, camping, skiing, loved any activity out in nature and among wildlife. He spent many years as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 333 in Newport Beach and led many backpacking trips into the San Bernadino and southern Sierra mountains in CA. He loved swimming in the ocean (no matter the water temperature) and was a lifelong and talented tennis and softball player.
After retiring, they moved from CA and loved living for more than a decade in their beautiful adobe home in Taos, NM. Hiking, fishing, and skiing in the mountains and canyons near Taos were favorite pastimes. They built many wonderful friendships, were active participants in several community organizations including, the Lions Club, Taos Watercolor Society, and the Taos Land Trust, and loved hosting the kids and grandkids for vacations and holidays.
To be closer to family, Richard and Charlene moved to Colorado in 2021. Charlene passed later that year after 47 years of marriage. Richard continued his lifelong ambitions to be active and forge strong friendships and he remained involved in several organizations in the Denver-area, including the Lions Club, Denver Athletic Club, Parkview Villas Homeowners Association, and the Golden Oldies 70+ Softball Team that he played on and managed until he was 86 years old. He was a fan of all Denver’s-professional sports teams and was in a season-ticket group at Coors Field to watch countless Colorado Rockies baseball games. He loved watching his grandkids perform in musical performances and baseball games.
Richard lived a spectacular and fulfilling life. A loving and caring son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to his family. A kind and gentle man always available for advice and conversation. A brilliant and appreciative student.
