Richard Leon Birdsall of Canon City, went to heaven peacefully in his sleep September 21, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. He fought a heroic battle against lung cancer for the last several months. Richard was born in Hot Springs, South Dakota on January 2, 1940 to Clay and Jeanne Birdsall. He attended elementary school in Florence and graduated from Florence High School. Richard was united in marriage to Barbara Hardrick and they had three children. They moved to Salida where he managed the Sears store for a period of time. Richard then went to work for Gibson’s, and later transferred to a store in Nebraska. After a few years, the family moved back to Florence, where he worked with his step-father, Alex Beltramo at the Florence Tire and Supply. After the tire shop sold, he continued working for Alex in the oil fields. He was also manager of the Florence Elks Lodge, and coached bowling at Fremont Lanes.
