Richard Lee Black, 90, of Bondurant formerly of Des Moines passed away on Thursday, December 2, 2021, at Courtyard Estates in Bondurant.

Richard was born September 20, 1931, in Batavia, IA son of Weldy and Velma (Silver) Black. He received his education in Fairfield, IA where he graduated from high school in 1949. Richard moved to Des Moines working as a mechanic in several local shops including Thermo King. He then enlisted in the United States Marines where he served his county during the Korean War.

On January 11, 1953, he married Betty Lyons and they made their home in Des Moines. Richard and Betty owned and operated Black Tool Company from 1968 until 2001. During that time, he purchased and sold tools from Mac Tools, Matco, Chicago Pneumatic, Channel Lock, and Cornwell.

Richard enjoyed completing projects, helping with events, providing lawncare and snow removal at Capitol Hill Christian Church; caring for his family’s home and grounds, maintaining his vehicles, traveling, riding roller coasters, and playing cribbage.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Betty Maxwell and Mary Louise Hollis, brother Donald, niece Christine Hollis, nephews Dennis and Doug, and son-in-law Randy Kollmann.

Richard is survived by his wife Betty, a son Rick (Barb) Black of Grimes, a daughter Victoria Kollmann of Buffalo City, WI, two grandsons Adam and Andrew, and five great-grandchildren Noah, Lily, Violet, Vivien and Nico.
