Richard L. “Dick” Ostrom, 87, of Elkhart, passed away Saturday, March 19, at his residence.

He was born in Goshen on May 2, 1928, to the late Robert and Winnie M. (Overholt) Ostrom.

He married Charlotte J. (Bomar) Smead on Sept. 8, 1951, in Angola. Charlotte died March 19, 2015. They had been married for 63 years.

In addition to his parents and wife, brothers Gene and Jack Ostrom and a sister, Alberta Sutterby, preceded him in death.

He is survived by a son, Richard Ostrom Jr. of Marana, Ariz.; stepchildren Vicki (Paul) Higginson of Mishawaka and John C. Smead Sr. of Marana; his grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Dick served in the U.S. Army during World War II and also during the Korean conflict. He was a life member of VFW Post 88 in Elkhart. He retired from the New York Central Railroad and Robert R. Young yards in 1988 after 36 years of service. Dick enjoyed fishing on the St. Joseph River behind his house and enjoyed bowling in his younger days.
