He died at 2:55 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007, in Methodist Hospital, in the Yellow Rose Hospice Unit, Indianapolis.
Born May 1, 1920, in Elkhart, he was the son of Harold and Ruby Snavely McDonald. He was married Sept. 5, 1943, in St.
Dick was a 1938 graduate of Elkhart High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University School of Business in 1942, where he was a member of the Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity.
After college he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in San Antonio, Texas. After the war and 23 years in the Army Reserves, Dick retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel.
He was a member of the Grissom Air Force Community Council and was responsible for changing the name from Bunker Hill A.F.B. to Grissom A.F.B. in honor of Hoosier astronaut, Gus Grissom.
For 55 years, Dick was an agent and district manager of Equitable Life Assurance Society (AXA).
He was certified by the Purdue University Marketing School.
Dick also qualified as a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table. He was president of North Central Life Underwriters Association, vice-president of Indiana State Life Underwriters Association, and a member of both the Indiana Leaders Club and Lafayette Area Estate Planning Council.
For 26 years, he was honored with the National Quality Award.
As a founder of the reactivated Logansport YMCA, he served as its second president with Bruce Kimmel as director.
He served on the boards of the former Community Council, United Fund and the Jaycees. He was a member of the I.U. Alumni Association. Dick was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International and a member for 59 years.
For the past 60 years, he has been a member of St.
In retirement, he and Betty enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii.
Surviving are one daughter, Janet McDonald Smiljanic and her husband, John, Coconut Grove, Fla.; one son, James McDonald and his wife, Jane Old, Coconut Creek, Fla.; grandchildren, John Smiljanic, Austin, Texas, Mark Smiljanic, Houston, Texas, and Johanna Smiljanic, Coconut Grove, Fla.; stepgrandsons, Larry Aagesen and his wife, Melissa Wong, Chicago, and Dr. Matthew Aagesen, Ann Arbor, Mich., and his fiancAC.e, Andrea Quandt, Chicago; and one sister-in-law, Betty McDonald, Elkhart.
One brother, H. Dawn McDonald, preceded in death.
