Dick attended country school through the eighth grade, and then graduated from Prairie City High School in 1951. He joined the U. S. Army in 1952, serving in Korean War.

Dick was an accomplished woodworker donating many of his items to charitable fundraisers. He used these talents in working with Habitat for Humanity. Dick also loved to play golf. He was also devoted to his family, supporting both his children and grandchildren in their many activities.
