Richard John Williams, 79, of Bethany, a retired New Haven Firefighter, passed away at his home in Bethany on March 31, 2013. He was the husband of Leona White Williams. Mr. Williams was born in Balston Spa, N.Y.March 12, 1934, son of the late John and Josephine Skolones Williams. He was appointed to the New Haven Fire Dept. Dec. 28, 1957 and retired July 18, 1984. On Feb. 14, 1959, he was riding on Engine 2, responding to an alarm at the Hotel Duncan when the fire apparatus was involved in an accident at Elm and Temple streets. The driver, Charles Mauro and firefighter William Carey were killed. He received a commendation for his actions at the YaleArt & ArchitectureBuilding fire on June 14, 1969. On March 26, 1976, he received the Medal of Merit for a rescue in EastRockPark that occurred Feb. 23, 1975 and shared in a Unit Citation with Truck Co. 6 for the same incident. He served in the U.S.
