Richard J. Smith

Passed away on Saturday, December 26, 2020, of Blackwood. Age 91. Beloved husband of the late Ann Marie (nee LePore). Devoted father of David R. Smith and Anne Marie Sweeney (Andrew). Loving grandfather of Julia, Frank and David. Proud great-grandfather of Santino. Dear brother of the late John Smith and Jane Mathis.

Richard was born in Philadelphia, PA, in 1929. He served in the army before graduating from The Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania, one of his many accomplishments. Richard worked for the Philadelphia Gas Works until his retirement around 1985. Richard was known by his family and friends for his positivity, faith and sense of peace. Everyone who knew Richard closely would describe him as a man devoted to loving those around him deeply and thoughtfully. To those close to him, he was often known as, “Poppy” and “Pop.” His family always looked forward to hearing his (sometimes repetitive) stories and knew that whenever asked how he was, he would reply by saying, “Can’t complain!” Richard was a role model and bright light of hope for everyone in his life that through love, hope and kindness we could conquer even the darkest of times. He will be missed by many.

Richard’s life will be honored and remembered privately by his family.
