Richard J. Murphy, age 82, of Plymouth, passed away on November 19, 2018 at Benchmark Senior Living at Plymouth Crossings. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Isabelle (Cullen) Murphy. He was the cherished father of Richard Murphy and his wife Rebecca of Plymouth, Christopher Murphy and his wife Sarah of Cranston, RI. He was the adored grandfather of Cullen, Kieran, and Eleanor Murphy of Plymouth and Camden and Quinn Murphy of Cranston, RI. He was the brother of Donald R. Murphy and his wife MaryAnn of Waltham, Mary Ellen Murphy of NJ and the late Ann “Nancy” Riley. Richard was born on March 10, 1936 in Boston to Richard H. and Anna (Mullen) Murphy. He honorably served in the United States Marine Corps. After the military he was a member of the VISTA Corps, where he worked to strengthen the lives of the less fortunate across the county. Throughout his life Richard was a fan of the underdog and often reminded his family that we have a responsibility to help all in need without being asked. Richard was the Postmaster at the White Horse Beach Post Office in Manomet for over twenty years until his retirement. He was a reader and fan of all things related to Abraham Lincoln and JFK. As an avid walker and Boston native he conquered a self-made goal and walked every bridge in Boston and also enjoyed spending time at the MIT museum, North End, Faneuil Hall, Fenway Park and the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. He enjoyed all New England Sports teams, especially the Bruins and often spoke about seeing “the new kid” (Bobby Orr) in his first game in a Bruins jersey. He was known for his sense of humor and was quick to offer a one liner from Rodney Dangerfield, Jackie Gleason and George Carlin when he felt it was necessary. He loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
