Obituary of Richard J. Diedrich

Age 81 of Sarasota, FL, formerly of St. Paul, MN. Richard “Dick” Diedrich, passed away peacefully June 12, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Alice, and only brother, Stephen. Survived by Judy Parish Diedrich, loving wife of 56 years; daughter, Pamela (Ron); sons, Stuart and John (Martha), and grandchildren, Carlee, Collin, Richard, Benjamin, Taylor and James. He attended grade school in Afton, MN, high school in St. Paul, Macalester College, and the University of Minnesota. Dick learned Russian at the Army Language School in Monterey, CA, and was stationed in northern Japan with the U.S. Airforce Security Service as a radio traffic intercept analyst. He had a long career with the St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company before retiring in 1989 as vice president and general manager of the company’s operations in New England. He then served as President, CEO and board member of Sargasso Mutual Insurance Company, retiring in 2004. Dick passionately served both church and community. He was elected President of the Pioneer Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America, receiving the William E. Spurgeon Award and the Silver Beaver Award. He was a Baden Powell Fellow with the World Scout Foundation in Geneva, Switzerland. He also served on many boards including the Science Museum of Minnesota, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Opera Company, Oakland Cemetery Association, Baystate Medical Center and BSHS Insurance Company. He ushered at both the Church of the Redeemer in Sarasota and St. John the Evangelist in St. Paul. Dick loved his family and was happiest when he could be with his wife, children, grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
