Wynantskill – Richard J. Cooney, 71, of Main Avenue died Thursday, April 19, 2018, at his daughter’s residence after an extended battle with COPD.

Born in Troy , he was son of the late John James Cooney and Margery Malone Cooney. He had resided in Troy most his life, was a 1965 graduate of Troy High School and attended Hudson Valley Community College for a semester before enlisting in the United States Marine Corp, proudly serving during the Vietnam War. 

Richard was a Firefighter for the City of Troy, Fire Company Engine # 4 serving his community for fifteen years from 1972 and retiring in 1987.

He was a member of the Troy Retired Firefighters Association, Inc. Richard was a charismatic man’s man;  a dedicated NY Yankees fan, who enjoyed watching and betting the horses at Saratoga Race Track. He was a man of honor eternally proud of his Country, the City of Troy and his Irish heritage. He could tell a story like no other and had a knack for connecting with many. Above all, his family meant the world to him and he was equally loved in return. 

Survivors include his children, Charlene (William) Darmetko, Troy, Kristin (Kenneth Jr.) McGivern, Wynantskill, Jill (Jerry) Harris, Orlando, FL, DaVona (James) Francis, Troy;  his grandchildren, Amanda, Casey, Dakota, Dalton, Jordan, Jaiden, Bryan, Austin, and Ella Grace; his great grandchildren, Madisyn, Peyton, Sophia, Oliver, and Penelope; his sister, Kristin (Steven) Ayotte and brothers, Robert,  Kevin, Brian, and  Michael Cooney; his brother-in-law,  Ronald McEvilly Sr.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Erin E. McEvilly, Shaun and John Cooney.
