Richard “Dick” Lawrence Hinson Jr. died at noon on June 16, 2012, of lung and heart complications in Marianna. He was 85. Hinson received his education at Marianna High School, Riverside Military Academy in Georgia, the University of Florida and Florida State University. During World War II, he volunteered for the U.S. Navy and became a frogman in the elite UDT-SEAL team. He fought in the Pacific Ocean theater in the first generation of SEALS. When Hinson came home from the war, he transferred from the University of Florida to Florida State in 1947 to join the inaugural class of male students at the previously all-female college. In Tallahassee, he became an art major and charter member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He also met his future wife, Ann Jarvis of Bartow, at the Alpha Delta Pi house. Their first date was to a Florida State football game. After marriage, Hinson returned to Marianna and worked at his father’s livery and horse stable. In 1962, he started Hinson Insurance Agency, a business that recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. He was president of the Marianna Rotary Club in 1959 and was given a lifetime membership to Rotary in 2006.
