Richard Herbert Wallerstein passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, just 55 days before his 93rd birthday. Rich was born November 23, 1928, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Samuel and Rhea Christiansen Allred Wallerstein. He moved to Ogden at the age of 15. He attended and graduated from Washington Junior High and Ogden High School and served two years in the Army in Korea and Japan.
On May 2, 1953, he married Sharon Elaine Fuller after being smitten by her while getting a haircut in her father’s barbershop. Their marriage was solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple in 1975. Together they have three sons and two daughters, Steven Richard (ex Tami), Lisa, Michele (Glen) Ashdown, John Scott, James Eric. They have 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Rich studied various classes at Weber State College and was a licensed salesperson for insurance and real estate companies. He was employed by Meridian Publishing Company, then spent 32 years working for First Security Corporation as a printing supervisor. After retiring, he gained part time employment as a substitute teacher for Ogden City Schools and was an attendant for Lindquist Mortuary.
Throughout his life, Rich was very active in sports. During his school years, he played on the football and boxing teams. Rich spent 42 years as a professional official for football, basketball, and baseball, working city and little league, junior high, high school, and college games for the Western Athletic Association. He also coached basketball for his ward in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was honored when he was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame. His great love and interest for sports was never ending, and he planned much of his later days around watching football and basketball on TV.
Rich and Sharon lived in Ivins, Utah for the past 21 years where they enjoyed the desert beauty of the red mountains. He and Sharon were avid golfers. Rich was very social and enjoyed being a marshal at Coral Canyon Golf Course. He had an excellent memory and lived a very active and healthy life until 2016 when he and Sharon were hit by a car while they were walking. It was only after a broken hip, two months in rehabilitation and a hip replacement that finally slowed him down.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Lisa, grandson Wesley, sisters Carol McCoy and Faye Ballard.
As children, we wish to thank the many neighbors and friends, and grand-daughter Lindsey Harding and her children who’ve watched over and loved both mom and dad.
