Richard James Hansen was born October 25, 1929 in Red Cloud, Nebraska. He was the son of Andrew and Emma Harris Hansen. He died on Saturday, June 17,, 2017 after a short battle with cancer. He was 87 years old.
Richard was a lifelong resident of Red Cloud and received his formal education attending rural school District #33 through the 8th grade and graduated from Red Cloud High School in 1947. He was united in marriage with Irene Faye Tupper on February 22nd, 1951. After 58 years of marriage, Irene died on August 21, 2009. The union of Irene and Richard was blessed with a daughter, Patti, and two sons Ricky and Dennis. Richard farmed and raised livestock in Webster County for 66 years with his brother-in-law Lloyd Wulf and their sons Dennis Hansen and Brad Wulf.
He was an active member of Lion’s Club and received his 50-year pin recognizing his outstanding contributions and served as president from 1978-79 and 1988-89. He received the Three In ’83 Award presented by the Lion’s Club for actively participating and successfully achieving the established goals in the International President’s Program.
During 65 years of farming, he received the Nebraska Pioneer Award from the Knights of AK-SAR-BEN, received the Honorary Chapter Farmer awarded by Vocational FFA, and the Outstanding Young Farmers Award in recognition of exceptional progress in Agriculture and contributions to the community sponsored by the Red Cloud Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. He served on many committees and enjoyed the United Methodists Men’s group. He served on the Red Cloud School Board and enjoyed his bowling team from 1977-1985.
Left to treasure his memory is his daughter Patti Yaussi and husband Tom of Lincoln, Nebraska; son, Dennis and wife Sally of Red Cloud, three grandchildren: Heidi Peirce of Lincoln; Matthew Hansen and wife Sarah Baker Hansen of Omaha; and Cole Hansen and wife Abbey and great granddaughter Kate Hansen of Indianapolis; step granddaughters, Kasel Yaussi-Kunath and husband Mike of Lincoln and Lori Yaussi and fiancé Brian May of Palmyra, Nebraska, step great grandchildren, Taylor, Alexis and Jaxson Yaussi, a sister Doris Hansen Kosse, brother- in-law Milton Tupper; and brother-in-law, Lloyd Wulf all of Red Cloud; many relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his son Ricky, his sister Marjorie Garnand and his brother Kenneth Hansen.
