Richard Gene Whelchel 78, of Fortville passed away Wednesday May 20, 2009 in Greenfield. Mr. Whelchel was born on August 29, 1930 in Madison County, Indiana to Dewey Whelchel and Ruth (Sherman) Whelchel. Richard achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and was a 1948 graduate of Fortville High School.
He was a Navy veteran, serving during the Korean War. He retired in 1985 from Naval Avionics after 31 years of service as an electronics technician and inspector. Richard is survived by brothers, James J. Whelchel, of Fortville; and Robert J. (Susan) Whelchel, of Angola, IN; niece, Teresa A. (James) Wolfgang, of Fortville; and nephew, Jim A. Whelchel, of Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Charlotte (Manship) Whelchel.
