Richard Eli Sweet was born December 11, 1946, in Wolf Run, Ohio to parents Melvin P. and Anna M. Sweet. One of 9 children, Richard’s favorite pastime was laughing, fishing, and teasing his siblings.
Richard spent time as a radio DJ before enlisting and serving our great country in the United States Navy from 1964-1967. Onboard the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Independence, Richard worked as a top-secret messenger, as well as loading and fueling aircraft. He traveled to many countries during his service, including Spain, Germany, France, and Italy, always remembering to bring dolls and gifts home to his girls.
Richard retired from Broward County Board of County Commissioners as Supervisor of H.V.A.C. after 20 years in 2001. He was a freaking legend in his own mind, as well in the minds of those that he worked with.
In 2005, with nearly all of his family present, Richard was sworn in as Master of the Okeechobee Masonic Lodge, #237. Something he was profoundly proud of.
Preceded in death by his parents Melvin and Anna Sweet, brothers George Sweet and Harry Sweet, daughter Wendy Sweet-Nash, as well as aunts, uncles and others he loved dearly.
Richard is survived by his wife of 29 years, Terri Sweet; daughter, Nicole Dulany (Eric Garder) of Edmond, Oklahoma; son, Ronald Tetreault of Deerfield Beach, Florida; grandchildren, Timothy Dulany (Sara Dulany) of Cape Coral, Florida, Joshua Dulany (Brittany Dulany) of Cape Coral, Florida, Katie Dulany of Edmond, Oklahoma, Michael Tetreault, Devin Tetreault, and Alexa Tetreault of Deerfield Beach, Florida; brothers, Patrick Sweet (Margie Sweet), Anthony Sweet (Lora Sweet), Robert Sweet (Shelly Sweet); sisters, Madeline Sweet-Lord, Diane Kresak (Tom Kresak), Sonja Sweet; sister in law, Alice Sweet; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Richard was an avid fisherman, knife collector, prankster, and Nascar fan. He loved music, Mopar, and every dog he ever met. He was the friend you always turned to, the grandpa that taught you, the dad that cheered you, the husband that supported you, and the man that loved bigger than life. He will be missed and always loved by all who knew him.
