Richard Earl Iliff, 87, of Humboldt, Nebraska was born on August 4, 1926 in rural Humboldt, Nebraska to John C. and Florence Mildred (Gergens) Iliff. He spent his early childhood years growing up on the family farm northeast of Humboldt where he attended Cottage Country School through the 8th grade. Richard graduated from Bratton Union High School with the class of 1943. After his schooling, Rich was involved in farming until 1975. In the early 60’s, he started driving trucks locally while still farming and later drove a semi for Werner Enterprises until 1990, during this time Rich received a million mile award for safety. Upon retirement from Werner’s, Rich stared driving locally for Bern Meat Plant. On January 18, 1950, Rich was united in marriage to Helen Harmon in rural Shubert, Nebraska. They had two children, Greg and Sandy. Rich was later united in marriage to Mary Lou McDonald on December 4, 1982 in Humboldt, Nebraska. The couple moved back to the home place where he continued to live until he became a resident of the Colonial Acres Nursing Home in March of 2012.
Rich was a big fan of Husker football and International Harvester tractors. Needless to say, his favorite color was red. He was also a devoted “Ford man”. Rich enjoyed Nascar racing, bowling, card playing, fishing with his friends, gardening with Mary, and his 1953 Mercury. He was a member of the Humboldt Oddfellows Lodge # 34, Falls City Elks Club, Stella Saddle Club, and helped with meals on wheels.
Richard passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at the Colonial Acres Nursing Home in Humboldt, Nebraska having reached the age of eighty-seven years, eight months, and four days. He was preceded in death by his parents; wives Helen Harmon and Mary McDonald, and a sister Erma (Clark) Kershner.
Richard is survived by his children: Greg Iliff and his wife Lou Ann of Humboldt, NE; Sandy Hall and her husband David of Tecumseh, NE; step-son Scott Kolar and his wife Colette of Aurora, CO; grandchildren: Jaime Frey and her husband Cory of Humboldt, NE; Chrissy Taute of Tecumseh, NE; great-grandchildren: Katie, Hunter, and Jazmyn Frey of Humboldt, NE; Sophia Rainey and Harley Savago of Tecumseh, NE; Brandon and Taylor Kolar of Aurora, CO; and many other relatives and friends.
