Richard “Dick” Earl Snodgrass, age 88, died peacefully at his home in Chapin, Illinois on October 13, 2018.
He was born in Springfield on March 15, 1930. His parents were Burgess Ralph Snodgrass and Edith “Joan” Thacker Snodgrass Houston. After graduating from Lanphier High School, Dick married Patricia Prater of Abingdon, Virginia. He served as a diesel mechanic in the United States Navy from 1948 to 1957, and in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1962. Following his military service, Dick worked at Carnation in Jacksonville for 20 years, retiring in 1991. He worked as quartermaster for the Jacksonville chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for the past 20 years.
Dick was proud of his military service and was a passionate and active member of the American Legion Post 442 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1379. He served as the 1997 Illinois State Commander of the American Legion. He devoted three weeks each summer to serving as the treasurer of Illinois Boys’ State. He enjoyed raising sheep, farming and mowing, fishing, and serving his neighbors. His greatest passion, however, was his family and he particularly delighted in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dick is survived by his wife, Patricia; his two sons and their wives, Richard and Gloria and Ralph and Alice; nine grandchildren, Eric and Alaina Snodgrass, Sarah and Joe Riordan, Melinda Snodgrass, Drew and Maria Snodgrass, and Matthew and Allison Snodgrass; and four great-grandchildren, Amelia Snodgrass, Graham Snodgrass, Lily Snodgrass, and Miller Riordan, with a fifth great-grandchild due in December.
