Richard E. “Dick” Nielsen, age 79 of Midland, passed away peacefully on Friday February 17, 2017 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. The son of the late Theodore and Opal (Damaray) Nielsen was born in Alpena on July 10, 1937. He was proud to be a Midland High School graduate and to have received his Industrial Supervision Certificate from Delta College.

Dick served in the United States Army. He had been employed with Dow Chemical Company until his retirement in 1989 after 33 years of service. Dick held a private pilot’s license for many years and also worked part time at Shorty’s Shoe Shop for 46 years. After his retirement from Dow, Dick opened up the Cobbler’s Shoe Shop on the circle in Midland. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and tinkering out in his garage. He was a member of Lord of New Life Lutheran Church where he served as Chairman for 4 years.

Surviving is his wife of 59 years the former Nancy L. Wegner of whom he married on May 12, 1957, in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Midland; children, Keith (Mary) Nielsen, James (Mary B.) Nielsen, Jada (David) Davis; grandchildren, Jennifer (Tony) Hamilton, Nick Nielsen, Kolby (fiancé Whitney) Nielsen, Kaleigh Nielsen, Sully Davis, Kinsey Davis, Tori (Rueben) Cruz, Lenora (John) Woodmansee, Jeremy Brafford; great grand girls, Autumn and Ava; siblings, Theodore Nielsen, Jr., Sandy Culver, and John Doughty. In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his sisters, Beverly Bartlett, Linda Hogg and infant brother, Kenneth Nielsen and daughter in law, Kimberley.
