RICHARD “DICK” TANOOS

“IF YOU DON’T NOSE YOUR MEAT, NOSE YOUR BUTCHER”

Richard “Dick” Tanoos, 76, died Saturday, August 25th, 2012, at the I.U. Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Dick was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on May 15th, 1936, to Pete Tanoos & Bunda “Wanda” Tanoos.

Dick was the owner of the neighborhood family grocery store known as Tanoos’ Market located at the corner of 10th and Hulman Streets in Terre Haute. Tanoos’ Market was famous for the fresh cut meat he delivered to his customers on a daily basis for decades. Dick coined the store’s slogan, “If You Don’t Nose Your Meat – Nose Your Butcher”; a pun he created referring to his larger than average nose.

Dick loved sports and particularly enjoyed the football season where he entertained close family and friends to Monday Night Football parties culminating with a huge traditional Super Bowl party at his house which continued for over 40 years. In addition to football, Dick loved basketball – where he was an avid fan of the ISU Sycamores. As soon as the football and basketball seasons were over, Dick enjoyed baseball games especially the St. Louis Cardinals and watched games almost on a nightly basis.
