Richard G. Downs, age 77, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2020 at his residence in Delton, Michigan. Dick was born March 15, 1943 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the son of Gordon and Ethel (Denniston) Downs.
On July 29, 1961, he was united in marriage to Melinda L. (Jones) Downs and they were longtime area residents. From 1975-2010, he owned/operated ServiCo Food Equipment Company, and throughout the years he was known to employ many family and friends in the family business. Dick was a friend to many and could always be found helping either a family member or friend in need.
Dick was a member and self-appointed leader of the “BFD” Family, and was a longtime member of the Louie’s Trophy House Club. Throughout the years he was always supportive of his children’s activities, especially sporting activities, by coaching Lakewood Little League, coaching Rocket Football (Washington Raiders) and member and president of the Portage Northern Football Boosters.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years: Melinda Downs; three children: Richard (Ethel) Downs, Ronald Downs and Rachel (Jim) Downs Burza; seven grandchildren: Aaron Downs, Morgan (Brandon) Rickstad, Emily Jones, Brock Downs, Taylor Downs, Allison Downs (fiancé Jon) and Lyndsey Downs; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers: Larry (Sharon) Downs and David (Beverly) Downs; many special nieces, nephews, cousins (especially “The Andrus Boys”: Rod, Darrel and Carl). Also, his “BFD” family and other wonderful friends and neighbors. Dick was preceded in death by his parents and by two great-granddaughters: Aubree and Ava.
