Richard “Dick” E. Dunbar of Bloomington passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 leaving behind his beloved family, friends and community.

Dick, was born on September 9, 1946, the second eldest child of Robert W. Dunbar and Florene (King) Dunbar. Dick spent his lifetime in Bloomington, IN, graduated from Bloomington High School in 1964 and married his high school sweetheart Karra (Sare) Dunbar on January 29, 1966, his wife of 55 years. Dick’s greatest joy was his family, all of the Dunbars, Sares and especially his wife, children and grandchildren. Surviving are his beloved wife Karra, his daughter Dia (John) Page, his son Kurt (Debbie) Dunbar. “Grandpa” was a hero to his grandchildren Jesse (Alex) Page, Danielle Page (Matt) Garrison, Grace Dunbar and his great-grandchildren Jetson Page and Luke Garrison; his sisters Nancy (Bob) Shiflet, Carol (Bob) Stancombe, Cathy (Tim) Sparks and brother Jim (Barb) Dunbar, sister-in-law Gloria Dunbar, sister-in-law Mari Dunbar, brother-in-law Gary Denson, as well as, many nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Florene Dunbar, his brothers Wesley Dunbar, Stephen Dunbar and sister Terri Denson.

Dick owned and operated Sim’s Poultry for many years. One of his favorite pastimes was softball and he was a member and sponsor for many Sim’s Poultry teams where he built some of his greatest friendships and served as a mentor to many. Dick’s great passion was serving the community. He was an honorary life member of Bloomington Elks Lodge #446, past Exalted Ruler and District Deputy for the Southwest District of Indiana.

Dick was an honorary life member of the American Legion Burton Woolery Post 18 where he served as the Commander from 2010-2016 and 2017-2021. His most notable honors for Post 18 include the Legionnaire of the Year Award, past Trustee member, serving on the American Legion District 7 Executive Board and Oratorical Chairman for the District. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 18 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 604 honoring his father’s service. Dick served in the Army Reserves from 1967-1971.
