Richard Duane Umstead, the son of Sam and Nellie (McCutcheon) Umstead, was born on June 14, 1931, in Eagle Grove, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, graduating from Eagle Grove High School – where he was a wrestler – in 1949. Dick served in the United States Army during the Korean War, stationed with the 97th Engineer Co. at Verdun, France with the refrigeration outfit, entering on May 23, 1952 and honorably discharged as Corporal on May 24, 1954.
Dick enjoyed family vacations, fishing trips, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, putting the perfect finish on wood, reading and learning – especially about Geography. Dick is fondly remembered for his firm handshakes, knowing EVERYONE’S birthday, anniversaries, and enjoying time with his family. He will be greatly missed by everyone.
Dick passed away on Saturday, December 12, 2020, at the age of 89 years, at Rotary Senior Living. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, LeRoy Umstead (Katherine), Robert Umstead (Rose), Paul Umstead (Maxine), Lyden Umstead and brother-in-law, Dale Zeigler; nephews, Larry Umstead and David Zeigler.
Survivors include his wife Delores; daughter, Diane Umthun (Steve) of Cedar Falls; son, Steve Umstead (Shelly) Humboldt; five grandchildren: Jennifer Weatherford (Eric), Brett Umthun (Megan), Kelsey Umthun, Jessica Harklau (Josh) and Jenna Kaufman (Dane); six great-grandchildren: Ava, Silas, Kyren, Brecken, Draven and Edison; sister, Maxine Zeigler of Garner; sister-in-law, Viola Umstead of Tucson, AZ and numerous nieces and nephews.
