Richard A. “Dick” Mennen, 88, of Lafayette, passed away Saturday, April 23, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born August 19, 1933, in Lafayette to Wilbur and Violet (Shaw) Mennen. Dick was raised in Battleground and was a graduate of Battleground High School. On September 25, 1954, he married the love of his life, Rena Smith. Rena and Dick raised 5 wonderful children together. They shared a lifetime of life and happiness until Rena’s death in January 2021.
Dick wore many hats throughout his life. He served the community as a Police Officer for the City of Lafayette, retiring from that position in 1978. He then worked for Fairfield Manufacturing (green test) until 1995 and finally he worked as a Security Officer for the U.S. Marshal Court. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Joining the Catholic Church in 1954, Dick lived according to God’s laws and was an example and impressed the importance of faith upon his children, family, friends, and co-workers. He was always available to anyone who needed him, and friends and family often turned to him for advice. His compassion and wisdom brought comfort to all who knew him. Richard represented the good in people that we all need.
He loved and cared for his family deeply, who now takes great comfort in knowing he is in the presence of the God he served so faithfully on this earth.
He is survived by his children, Michael S. (Shirley) Mennen of Lafayette, Michelle M. (Frank) Spear of Mulberry, Jill M. (John) Aldridge of Lafayette, Kim A. (Robert) Steiner of Talbot, TN, and Richard L. Mennen of Lafayette; 8 grandchildren, Nicholas Mennen, Adam Mennen, Aaron Aldridge, Kaitlyn Henderson, Keith Freestone, Elizabeth Hudgens, Nicole Steiner, and Craig Steiner; 6 great-grandchildren, Aden Hudgens, Wesley Hudgens, Noble Mennen, Rand Freestone, Kinzley Aldridge, and Jonah Henderson; and sister in law, Dorothy Mennen of Santa Marie, CA.
Along with his beloved wife, Rena, he was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Violet, and his brothers, Charles Mennen and Russell Mennen.
