Richard D. “Dick” Rose, 87, of Goshen, passed away Monday, April 7, at IU Health Goshen Hospital following complications from surgery.

Dick was born Sept. 15, 1926, in Ligonier to the late Calvin L. and Lucille Sarah (Taylor) Rose.

Following graduation from Ligonier High School in 1945, where he was a member of the band, he joined the U.S. Army in January 1945 and served with the 58th Signal Battalion as a radio operator during the occupation of Japan. He was with the first ship of military personnel that landed in Japan. He was honorably discharged in November 1946.

He married his high school sweetheart, Pauline J. Fahl, on June 13, 1948, in Ligonier.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Pauline J. of Goshen, and their children: a son, Jim “JR” Rose of Goshen, and daughter Teresa Mabie of Elkhart.

Dick’s son-in-law, Cheyenne Mabie, preceded him in death March 28, 2012.

Dick had a lifelong interest in technology, from being a radio operator during the war, spinning records at WTRC FM in Elkhart, or logging on to his tablet where he would check the daily winning lottery numbers and play games. Dick was also a ham radio operator with the call sign KC9PW. He built many of the radios he used and was a member of the Goshen Amateur Radio Club.

Dick was also an insurance agent with American Income Life Insurance Co. With his partner, Henry Nymeyer, he started Real Estate Training Academy and later Nymeyer & Rose Realty Co. Dick purchased the first Arby’s Roast Beef Restaurant franchise in the area, with the first one in Benton Harbor, Mich. Joined by partners Henry Nymeyer and Richard Lavery they had nine stores locally in Indiana and Michigan. After retiring, Dick and son Jim started Rose Enterprises, where they bought and refurbished apartments and houses.

Dick loved to eat out, enjoyed traveling and camping in the family travel trailer and playing cards, and he was an avid Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame football fan.
