Richard was born on July 27, 1940 in Peoria the son of Harry A. and Helen I. Martin Carmichael. He married Jacqueline E. Collins on September 27, 1959 in Peoria. She survives along with their children Richard A. (Renay) Carmichael Jr. of Silvis, IL. Ralph (Susan) Carmichael of Bradford, IL. Rebecca (Scott) Moore of Silvis, IL. Ronald (Anna) Carmichael of Galva, IL. and Randal (Lora) Carmichael of Cambridge, IL,
Also surviving are his mother Helen Donaldson of East Peoria, as well as 6 grandchildren Rikki Lynn, Jolee, Gunnar, Sara, Emily, and Abby, one great granddaughter Skylee.
He is also survived by five brothers Charles (Brenda) Carmichael of Hampton, IL, James (Connie) Carmichael of Varna, IL, Steve (Noni) Carmichael of Garfield, AR, Tom Johnson and Robert (Brenda) Johnson Sr.
