Richard T. “Old Man/Superman” Butler Sr., 90, of Grand Rapids, Michigan passed away April 28, 2021. Richard was born to the late Richard & Alvina (Anderson) Butler in Toledo, Ohio on July 18, 1930. He married Jane Vanlent and she preceded him in death.
Richard is survived by his daughters: Becky (Joseph) Darmogray of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Cindy Butler of Burlington, Kentucky; stepsons: Gary Vanlent of Liberty Center, Ohio, Jeff Vanlent of Deerfield, Michigan; daughter-in-law Pat Butler; 10 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; sisters Mabel Vollmar of Oxford, Alabama; and Shirley Franks of Napoleon, Ohio.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jane, son Richard T. Butler Jr., and brother Ervin Butler, Richard proudly served his country in the Army National Guard. He worked at Johns-Manville for over 25 years in Research and Development. Richard was a member of the JM Quarter Century Club, the Henry County Ohio Senior Center, and the Idolers and Loafers of Johns-Manville. Dick had a wonderful life, which he shared with many, many people. He was always a happy, helpful, giving and caring person. There wasn’t a day that went by that someone’s day wasn’t made better by seeing the twinkle in his eyes. He will be forever loved and forever missed.
The family would like to give a special thank you to nephew John Lawson and niece Heather Lawson for making his last years so memorable for him.
