Richard ‘Butch’ Walter Diemer Jr. passed away at home, surrounded by family, on January 26, 2022, after bravely enduring a struggle with MSA (multi-system atrophy). Butch was born in Toledo, Ohio on February 20, 1941 to Shirley (Rouse) and Richard Walter Diemer. He graduated from Ottawa Hills High School (class of 1958), and earned a bachelor’s degree in business and a master’s in cultural anthropology from the University of Toledo. Butch married Patricia Ann (Aldredge) Diemer in 1964 and they’ve enjoyed a long and happy marriage for the past 57 years. In Toledo, they raised their beloved children, Candace Ann Stewart and Marc Ian Diemer. Butch was a successful insurance broker for many years before they moved to Boulder, Colorado in 1997 to be closer to their children and five grandchildren. In Colorado, Butch realized a new career as a custom home builder. His many interests and hobbies were expansive throughout his life, and he was impressively accomplished at all of them. He was a pilot, daredevil water skier, race car driver, a skilled woodworker, boat-builder and furniture maker, and a life-long athlete, competing in and winning numerous running races and triathlons over many years. He was a Canadian Ironman finisher, and completed both the Chesapeake Bay Swim and Escape from Alcatraz triathlon multiple times, winning his age group in both events. Butch was also an avid reader and life-long learner who possessed deep knowledge across many subjects, with particular interests in anthropology, history, and natural sciences. Above all, Butch was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, deeply proud of his children and grandchildren, a gentleman through-and-through, and loyal friend to many.
Butch was an animal lover and his favorite charities were the Boulder Colorado Humane Society, The Wildlife Sanctuary, and The Nature Conservancy.
