Rhody “Sarge” S. Heinen July 11, 1930 ~ January 11, 2015 Rhody “Sarge” Sylvester Heinen was born on July 11, 1930 to Edward and Dorothy Blonien-Heinen in a rural home in Junction City, Wisconsin. He attended a one-room school house through the 8th grade and completed high school in 1947 at St. Norbert’s in Green Bay, Wisconsin. After graduation he entered the U.S. Army as an infantry man and combat engineer. He served throughout Asia and Europe for 21 years and was active at the beginning of the Korean War in 1950 for a period of 13 months. During that time he married Mary Maxine Essex of Shanty Town, Wisconsin in 1950. From this marriage there were four children; Mark, Susan, Melanie and Wendy. Upon retirement form the Army in 1968, Rhody and Mary moved to Canon City where he became an instructor at the Canon City High School in the ROTC program. He also coached high school football for 25 years. The Canon City High School Rifle Team, under his leadership, was awarded the Girls Nation Rifle team championship in 1991. He also coached the military band, the color guard, and the silent drill team during his tenure. Rhody retired from teaching in 1991 and helped broadcast high school football on the radio for four years. Rhody was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and sports enthusiast. He spent many days on the links at Shadow Hills Golf Club. He was a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels Program and was active in St.
