Reverend Weldon Rudolph Brewington was born January 27, 1932, in Cumberland County, North Carolina, to the late James Ishma and Agnes Brewington. Weldon was also known as “Curly” a childhood nickname that would stay with him forever.
He attended the High Point public schools and graduated from William Penn High School. He enlisted in the US Army as a combat engineer, served during the Korean War and was awarded the National Defense service metal. He was employed by Hatteras Yachts, Styrex Foam, and retired from Alma Desk. At age 65 he received his CNA license to better take care of his wife during her illness whom he honored and cherished dearly.
Weldon married Maria Robertson and from this union came five children: Rodney, Beverly (deceased), Debora, Candise, and Dianne. High Point would be the home for him and his family his entire life. Whether in the neighborhood with others or coaching little league baseball Weldon was always helping others.
In 1969, Weldon joined in membership with the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Founder/Pastor S.M. Frazier. After giving his life to Christ, Pastor S.M. Frazier became his mentor. Weldon’s commitment to God’s service and the teachings of Jesus Christ was the lifestyle that he chose. With his beautiful wife, Maria by his side, he would grow more strongly in knowing His Heavenly Father as his Lord and Savior and carrying the gift of the Holy Spirit with him wherever he went. Weldon spend numerous hours each day studying the Word of God so that he could continue to grow in the knowledge and understanding of God’s word. He was an ordained Deacon, served on the Usher Board, Missionary Auxiliary, Laymen’s League, Teacher for the Men’s Bible Study Class, Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher of Men’s Sunday School Class, Van Driver, advisor and great supporter for the Youth Department and the Junior Choir.
Weldon was about his Father’s business and answered the master’s call to Go Preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was licensed to preach by the late Founder/Pastor S.M. Frazier. On July 24, 1980, he was ordained by Guilford Educational and Missionary Baptist Association.
To know Rev Brewington, Uncle Curly, Dad, Grandaddy, Pops, whatever you called him, was a joy. He taught about ” God’s Love” and especially about “Family Love”. You could always find him preaching, teaching, praying, singing and praising God at any appointed time. He loved God with all his heart, and he wanted to make sure everyone that he met knew who God was as well. If you knew him you never forgot him because he left you with a kind word, imparted wisdom, or just broke out into a song. He will truly be missed by all who knew him. “To God Be the Glory”.
In addition to his parents, Weldon was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Brewington; two brothers; Hubert Brewington and James O’Dell Brewington; three sisters, Ludy Norman, Yvonne Woods, and Lacy Marie Dillard.
He leaves to cherish his memory, one son, Rodney Brewington (Marilyn); three daughters, Elder Debora Fields, Candise Hanson both of High Point; Dianne Knight (Delathan) of Greensboro; one sister-in-law, Shirrol Thompson (Atlas) of Durham, NC; two brothers-in-law, Rev. Roosevelt Robertson (Izetta) of High Point, NC and Rev Bobby Robertson (Diane) of Alexandria, VA; ten grandchildren, Dr. Naquita T. Brewington-McCormick, Darius Brewington, Desmond Bennett, Darryl Bennett, Jr, Kenyon Brewington, Anita Medley, Kenneth Hanson, Jr, Shapera Love, Natavia Knight, and DeLathia Knight; twenty-six great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
