Rev. Robert G. Petersen, D.D, “Pastor Bob” age 94, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, joining his beloved wife Kathryn (Kay) Baldwin Petersen, who predeceased him in 2005. He was born April 21, 1919, in Brooklyn, NY, and baptized at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Brooklyn.
He attended Upsala College from 1940 to 1943. He proudly served his country in the US Navy from 1943-1944. He was stationed at the Sampson Naval Training Station in New York. He returned to Upsala College and earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1944. He graduated in 1947 from the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, PA with a Master of Divinity Degree He was honored with a Doctor of Divinity Degree from Upsala in 1990. His Pastorates included Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Somerville, NJ, Christ Lutheran Church in Camden, NJ, and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Beachwood, NJ Pastoral Associate at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Tabernacle, NJ. Bob and Kay shared their love of travel (especially in their “rig”), music, golf, and the Phillies. He was the devoted father of Karen Selby (Norman) of Bayville, NJ, Robyn Hirshblond (Edgar) of Bayville, and Bruce Petersen (Colleen) of Hastings, MN.
“Gramps” was the loving grandfather of Todd Selby (Angela), Shannon Ponticelli (Steven), Scott Selby(Christine), Lorrin Selby, Matthew Hirshblond (Brittany), Jill Lauder (Michael), Brian Hirshblond, Conor Petersen, and great-grandchildren Kayla, Emma, Jared, Alina, Brielle, Sophia, Gianna, Jack, Amelia, and Olive.
