Rev. Gregory Albert Green, C.S.C., 85, died Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, IN. He was born on July 17, 1935, in Chicago, IL, to Albert and Helen (Sulaski) Green. Fr. Green was received into the Congregation of Holy Cross on August 15, 1953, made his First Profession of Vows on August 16, 1954 and made his Final Profession on August 16, 1957. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, in 1958, then attended Holy Cross College in Washington, D.C., where he received his M.A. in Theology. It was an exciting time for him to be in D.C. – with Senate hearings and the election of President Kennedy, whom he met and whose inauguration he attended. Fr. Green was ordained a Holy Cross priest in Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame, IN, on June 6, 1962.

After ordination, Fr. Green assisted at a parish in Detroit, then returned to the University of Notre Dame to serve as Chaplain (Assistant Rector) of Breen-Phillips Hall. The following summer, he was sent to Texas to assist in a parish, then received his first long-term parish assignment in 1963 at St. Bernard’s Parish, Watertown, WI, where he served until 1967. In 1967, Fr. Green returned to South Bend, IN, to assist at St. Joseph’s Parish. He served there until 1972, when he was asked to help in the formation of novices at the Novitiate, which was then located in Bennington, VT. From 1975 to 1976, Fr. Green served at Holy Cross Parish, South Bend, IN, before being assigned to serve at the University of Notre Dame as Rector of Sorin Hall. From 1977 to 1984, Fr. Green served as Associate Vice President of Student Affairs at the University of Notre Dame. From 1985 to 1987, he served in the Formation Staff at Moreau Seminary, Notre Dame, IN, and then again at the University of Notre Dame as Staff Chaplain from 1988 to 2013, where he was so instrumental in ministering to the spiritual needs of the staff of Notre Dame. Fr. Green was particularly proud that his niece and four nephews all graduated from Notre Dame. He was a beloved “priest in residence” at Welsh Family Hall for many years. He moved to Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, IN, in 2019.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Albert and Helen Green, and his sister, Margaret Froehlke. He is survived by his brother-in-law, Dr. Donald Froehlke; nephews, Dr. Robert Froehlke, Peter Froehlke, Donald Froehlke, and Paul Froehlke; and niece, Gretchen Prebys.
