Reverend Dr. Chatman Ellis Payne, Jr. was born on May 31, 1954 to the late Chatman Ellis Payne Sr., and Janie Mae Payne in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Rev. Payne graduated from Edison High School and upon graduation joined the United States Marine Corp., where at the end of his tour he received an Honorable Discharge.
Rev. Payne moved to New York where his ministry began. He received training at the Bowery Missions, New York School of the Bible and his Chaplaincy training at Kings County Hospital and St. Johns Hospital, Far Rockaway. He served as Chaplain to several ministries as well as several prison ministries, nursing homes and street evangelism (one of his favorite ministries), he was always for the people.
He worked at the American Bible Society (ABS) for 20 years. And continued to minister to those he came in contact with. He taught Chaplaincy at ABS and Fordham University Chaplaincy Program. Later he earned his doctorate in Divinity. He also authored a book called Changed! From Rebellion to Restoration.
Rev. Chatman, (Chappy, or Chap, as some knew him) had a long life of serving his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Always willing to help with hands on service, where needed. Never complaining, but always serving even til the time he was taken home.
Rev. Payne is survived by his wife, Sandra Payne, whom he met in 1995 at Calvary Baptist Church in New York and were married in 1997 and beloved cat Moses; He is also survived by two sisters, Cecelia Rush (husband Alan), Trudie Smith (husband Barry); six brothers, Matthew, Cleatus, Reggie, Nathaniel, Tyrone (wife Denise), and Richard Ladson, brothers-in-law, Leroy, and Ronnie; sisters-in-law, Theresa, Jacqui, and Leona. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, pastors, lay-persons and friends.
Rev. Payne joins his sister Jennifer Powers and brother Christopher Payne in Heaven.
Pastor Chatman Payne has truly made a difference in so many lives and he will be missed.
