He was a 1982 graduate of Johnson High School in Gainesville. He had worked for Kubota Company for ten years. Rev. Mahaffey was a member of Greater Love Baptist Church in Flowery Branch where he served as a song leader, and also was a preacher. He was an avid Braves fan.
