Rebecca Mae McCoy was born in Buffalo Center, IA on October 19, 1951 the daughter of Leon and Jeanne McCoy. She grew up with her parents on several farms in the area of north Kossuth County. She started school at the Grant consolidated school in Grant Township. She enjoyed living on the farm with her pets and animals. She cleaned up a small old chicken house and made a very nice playhouse, where all her neighbor kids would come to play. When she was in the sixth grade, her parents quit farming and moved to Ledyard, IA. Her parents both worked at the State Bank of Ledyard.
She finished school there and active in all sports and activities. She was editor of the school paper, cheer leader, played saxophone in the band, and was a friend of all. At the end of her Junior year, she was chosen to compete in the teen queen competition at the Iowa State Fair. They had a judge each day, pick a winner of individual groups, and the winner went on to compete against all the other winners. She won her individual group, but the lost out in the finals. It was a very nice experience for her and her parents.
After her graduation banquet and dance, she had an awfully bad auto accident with a very serious brain injury. She remained in a coma for several weeks, then had to learn how to walk and talk all over again. The accident destroyed her short-term memory and it never improved. After attending many handy capped services and exercises she was able to live alone with supervision. In her late fifty’s she began losing her walking ability and at about age sixty she had to go into an assisted living complex. In her later years she resided in Accura Healthcare in Spirit Lake.
She is survived by her father Leon McCoy. She was preceded in death by her mother Jeanne and brother Mark.
